Raw feeding has been growing steadily in Australia for years, and for good reason. Dogs fed a raw diet often show improvements in coat quality, digestion, energy levels, and dental health. But if you're new to it, the idea can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? How much do you feed? Is it safe?
This guide answers those questions — specifically for wild game proteins like kangaroo, deer, and rabbit.
What is raw feeding?
Raw feeding means giving your dog uncooked meat, bone, and organ — as close to its natural state as possible. The most common frameworks are:
- BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food): a mix of raw meaty bones, muscle meat, organ meat, and some plant matter
- Prey model raw (PMR): focuses almost entirely on animal-based foods, mimicking the whole-prey diet of wild canids
Both approaches work well with wild game proteins. The key principle is the same: feed real, minimally processed food.
Why wild game for raw feeding?
Wild game is one of the cleanest raw protein sources available. Because animals like kangaroo, deer, and rabbit are wild-caught rather than farmed, there are no concerns about antibiotic residues, growth hormones, or poor living conditions. The meat is lean, nutrient-dense, and highly digestible — exactly what you want when feeding raw.
For dogs new to raw feeding, kangaroo mince is an excellent starting point. It's mild, easy to portion, and well-tolerated by most dogs, including those with sensitive stomachs.
How much should you feed?
A general starting point for adult dogs is 2–3% of their ideal body weight per day, split across two meals. So a 20kg dog would eat roughly 400–600g of raw food daily.
Puppies, working dogs, and very active breeds typically need more — closer to 3–5% of body weight. Senior or less active dogs may need slightly less. Adjust based on your dog's body condition over time: you should be able to feel their ribs without pressing hard, but not see them prominently.
Getting the balance right
A complete raw diet over time should include:
- Muscle meat (the bulk — 70–80%): kangaroo mince, rabbit pieces, deer
- Raw meaty bones (10–15%): kangaroo ribs, rabbit frames — these provide calcium and support dental health
- Organ meat (10%): liver, kidney — rich in vitamins and minerals; don't overfeed liver as it's very rich
You don't need to hit perfect balance in every single meal. Think in terms of balance over a week.
Transitioning from kibble
The most common mistake new raw feeders make is switching too quickly. A sudden change can cause loose stools or digestive upset — not because raw is bad, but because your dog's gut needs time to adjust.
A simple transition plan:
- Week 1: Replace 25% of current food with raw
- Week 2: 50/50 split
- Week 3: 75% raw, 25% old food
- Week 4: Full raw
Some dogs transition faster, some slower. Follow your dog's lead. Firmer stools and increased enthusiasm at meal time are good signs.
Food safety basics
Raw meat requires the same food-safe handling you'd use for your own meals:
- Thaw in the fridge, not on the bench
- Wash hands, bowls, and surfaces after handling
- Don't leave raw food out for more than 30 minutes
- Keep raw food separate from other foods in the fridge
Healthy adult dogs have highly acidic stomachs that handle raw meat and bone safely. If your dog is immunocompromised or very young, consult your vet before starting.
What to expect in the first few weeks
Most dogs take to raw feeding immediately and enthusiastically. In the first few weeks you may notice:
- Smaller, firmer, less smelly stools (a good sign — more of the food is being absorbed)
- Improved coat shine
- Better breath
- Increased energy and engagement at meal times
Some dogs go through a brief detox period with loose stools or increased shedding. This usually resolves within 1–2 weeks.
Ready to start?
The best first step is simple: pick one protein and try it. Kangaroo mince is our most popular starting point — it's versatile, affordable, and dogs love it.
